Members of the 1st Signal Regiment, who formed the guard of honour for the centenary parade, prepare to present arms as they commemorate 100 years since the inception of the 1st Division. *** Local Caption *** Headquarters 1st Division (Deployable Joint Force Headquarters), commemorated the centenary of the raising of the 1st Australian Division with a number of tributes on Thursday, 14 August and Friday, 15 August 2014.

A church service honouring the sacrifices and milestones of the 1st Division was held at All Saints Chapel, Gallipoli Barracks in Brisbane. This was followed by a high tea at the Commander’s residence, which was renamed 'Bennett House' in honour of previous Commander of 1st Division and former Chief of Defence Force, General Sir Phillip Bennett, AC, KBE, DSO (Retd). The commemorations concluded with a centenary parade at Gallipoli Barracks, where Commander 1st Division, Major General Stuart Smith, DSC, AM, welcomed former Commander of the 1st Division and now Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove, AK, MC (Retd); Governor of Queensland, His Excellency, the Honourable Paul de Jersey; as well as a number of former generals of the 1st Division, as he paid tribute to the proud traditions and sacrifices made by the original ANZACs, and the legacy of the forebears of the 1st Division that has carried through to the more modern history of the Division.

The 1st Division was raised on 15 August 1914 as part of the First Australian Imperial Force (1st AIF), playing a significant part in the Gallipoli campaign of 1915, before going on to fight on the Western Front. The 1st Division captured the town of Pozieres in its first battle and went on to play significant parts in many other battles during the First World War, and has carried on this proud tradition during many conflicts, humanitarian and peacekeeping missions over the past 100 years.
