Cyber goes strategic
Posted By Tobias Feakin on March 19, 2013 @ 05:00
In my last blog post I explored how the New York Times hacking incident had raised the stakes in the cyber domain to an unprecedented degree. Having had time to reflect on this statement, I've reached the conclusion that we have entered a time when cyber issues have shifted from a technical, low priority matter to a strategic issue which not only carries significant risks but demands increased prioritisation and engagement from governments if it isn't to become a significant hindrance to international relations.Specifically with respect to the issue of cyber-enabled theft, we seek three things from the Chinese side… First, we need a recognition of the urgency and scope of this problem and the risk it poses—to international trade, to the reputation of Chinese industry and to our overall relations. Second, Beijing should take serious steps to investigate and put a stop to these activities. Finally, we need China to engage with us in a constructive direct dialogue to establish acceptable norms of behaviour in cyberspace.
