Submissions

The Strategist is a national security publication with a particular interest in Australian defence and security and broader subjects that touch on them.

If you wish to write for us, please first decide what kind of article you’d like to offer—typically, a commentary, analysis or explainer.

Then send us a pitch, not a complete draft. The first sentence of your pitch should tell us your main contention—the new opinion or assessment that you want to contribute. Then tell us why it’s important. Finally, mention one or two other contentions that would be in the article. Five sentences should be enough. More guidance is here.

Include a bio line, preferably one sentence: ‘Jane Bloggs is ….’ And disclose relevant commercial relationships, affiliations or potential conflicts of interest. Please do not submit a piece to The Strategist that is under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Send the pitch to us at [email protected].

We usually limit articles to 800 words and like seeing shorter ones. We can consider proposals for articles longer than 800 words but will often say no.

Please read our guide to Strategist style before writing the complete draft.

The complete draft must carry this certification: ‘AI contributed no ideas to this article—author name.’ This does not mean an author cannot use AI for research or to improve expression.
